The Harz region is a much visited cultural landscape in the heart of Germany. Extending into the states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, it is one of the most geologically diverse highland regions. Rich ore deposits, the power of water, deep forests, and fertile soils made the Harz region an early centre of power in the Holy Roman Empire. Castles and Romanesque churches are stone-built monuments from the Middle Ages. A thousand years on the Harz was one of the centres of early industrialisation. Today the Harz is also a Nature Park, and the Harz region is part of the second largest UNESCO Global Geopark. As the body responsible for the Geopark, the Regionalverband Harz, based in Quedlinburg, coordinates the cooperative work of a wide variety of agencies in the three federal states. The Regionalverband Harz is also active in promoting culture within the region.

A unique experience is a ride on the Harz narrow gauge railway, from Quedlinburg via the Selke Valley, from Nordhausen, or from Wernigerode, to the summit of the Brocken, the “Mountain of the Germans”. Visit world heritage sites: the house in Eisleben where the Protestant reformer Martin Luther was born and died, Quedlinburg or the old town of Goslar, the Rammelsberg mine, and the Upper Harz Water Management System can all be found in the Harz region.
